Most of us know IKEA for producing simply designed, solid light pine style furniture that comes in handy flat pack boxes. Recently though they’ve expanded their range to include some stunning mid-century modern furniture in their Stockholm range.

The range stretches from sofas, through shelves to TV benches and beyond. Each piece is elegantly styled and tends towards the darker wood colours such as oak, rather than more traditional IKEA blonde pine. The finishing touches are excellent with lightly self-closing drawers and subtly integrated features used to full effect. This is truely grown up IKEA and well worth checking out (US, UK).

This stunning table has been created using recycled bowling lanes by furniture designer William
Stranger. Based in LA, Stranger specialises in sustainable furniture from various sources, combining his skills in wood working with a talent for beautiful, tight execution. Currently his exhibition ‘Second Life’ can be found in LA at the Fifth Floor Gallery until November 15th.

Starting this weekend the Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design is running in Cheltenham. There should be some beautiful examples of design furniture for you to peruse, such as this wonderful rocker chair by Richard Fairbrother.

Addendum 3rd September 2009: Richard Fairbrother got in touch to offer some more information about his wonderful rocking chair. The chair is made to commission from American Black Walnut and is covered in a two tone broadgauge leather. So hurry along to his site and order one now!

For fans of beautiful antique desks with that mid-century modern slant check out Fears and Kahn with their regularly rotating selection of lovingly restored furniture and knick knacks. The desk above, in mahogan finished with rosewood, was originally by Gordon Russell in the 1960s, and is currently available for £1200.
